Jazz Notes: Goings on in the jazz world

Today is June 26th.


Bass player Reggie Workman was born this day in 1937 in Philadelphia. His first jazz collaboration was with saxophonist Gigi Gryce in 1958. His other associations have included Red Garland, John Coltrane, Herbie Mann, Thelonious Monk, Freddie Hubbard, Archie Shepp, Lee Morgan, Art Farmer, Oliver Lake and David Murray.


On this day in 1956, young trumpet great Clifford Brown and pianist Richie Powell were killed in a car accident on the Pennsylvania Turnpike. Their car, driven by Powell's wife, went off the rain-slicked highway as they headed from Philadelphia to a club date in Chicago with the band that Brown co-led with drummer Max Roach.


On this day in 1983, trumpeter Harry James played his last engagement at the Century Plaza in Los Angeles. He died nine days later.


Trumpeter Ziggy Elman died in Los Angeles on this day in 1968 at age 54.


On this night in 2001, pianist Keith Jarrett's Standards Trio with bassist Gary Peacock and drummer Jack DeJohnette performed at Carnegie Hall tonight as part of New York's JVC Jazz Festival.


Looking at today's hip happenings...


"If You Only Knew," the Jimmy Scott documentary shot and directed by Matthew Buzzell, won the Audience Award earlier this month at the Atlanta Film Festival. The final award of the festival, the Audience Award is a noncategorical honor that goes to the film audiences responded to most.

The picture's West Coast premiere, hosted by the American Cinematheque, takes place July 16 at the historic Egyptian Theatre on Hollywood Boulevard. Scott performs the following night at the Hollywood Bowl as part of a tribute to Billie Holiday.


The JVC Jazz Festival in New York tonight presents the Keith Jarrett, Gary Peacock, Jack DeJohnette trio at Carnegie Hall. The Wynton Marsalis Septet and Roy Haynes' Birds of a Feather band are at the Beacon Theater. Jane Monheit, Barbara Carroll and her Trio, and the Peter Cincotti Quartet are at the Kaye Playhouse.

Elsewhere on the New York scene... the Dizzy Gillespie Alumni All-Star Band will perform at the Blue Note through Sunday. The Don Byron Sextet's Music For Six Musicians project with

James Zollar, Edsel Gomez, Leo Traversa, Milton Cardona and Ben Wittman is at the Village Vanguard tonight. Lea Delaria and her trio are at Iridium through Sunday. Marcus Miller is at the Village Underground tonight.

Dr. Lonnie Smith, Joe Beck, Bob Berg, Idris Muhammad and Adam Rogers are at Birdland tonight. The John Benitez quartet is at the Zinc Bar tonight. John Scofield and his band perform tonight as part of the Hudson River Festival. Matt Darriau, Brad Shepik, Rufus Cappadocia and Seido Salifoski are at the Knitting Factory. David Berger conducts the Sultans of Swing as part of the Midsummer Night Swing series at Lincoln Center.

The Jazz Gallery tonight hosts a tribute to the late painter and photographer David X. Young. The event has been organized by his daughter, Eliza, to honor her father's legacy and to celebrate his seminal role both in an important period of jazz history and in the lives of countless musicians and artists who benefited from his generosity of spirit. The tribute will feature a retrospective exhibit of David's paintings and his photography as well as live music by a group of musicians who regularly participated in his "jazz loft's" various musical activities. They include David Amram on French horn, piano and kazoo, Bill Crow on bass and Teddy Charles on vibraphone.

Mark Griffith examines the drum solo, past and present, in a presentation tonight at the Arkadia Music Center.

On the Ohio jazz scene... the Classic Jazz Band performs at a free concert today at Cascade Plaza in Akron. Rabbi Gary Robuck, Jocelyn Robuck, Verities and Balderdash, Jerry Chester and Sherri Gross are featured tonight in a Memories by Moonlight concert at the Cain Park Alma Theater in Cleveland. Freddy Cole is at Nighttown in Cleveland.


In and around Chicago... the Ray Brown trio with Larry Fuller and Karriem Riggins is at the Jazz Showcase . Mike Finnerty and the Jazz Hippies are at Cafe Ennui. The Bill Porter Orchestra with Rich Fudoli is at Green Dolphin Street. Ken Saydak is at Joe's BeBop Café and Jazz Emporium. Andrew Blenderman is at Philander's in Oak Park. The Ryan Cohan trio is at Pops for Champagne tonight.


On the New Orleans jazz scene... Bill Solley is at Cobalt. Leigh 'Little Queenie' Harris is at Dos Jefes. The Soul Rebels Brass Band is at El Matador. Ingrid Lucia sings at the Ritz Carlton's French Quarter Bar. The Jim Markway quartet is at the Funky Butt. Louis Ford is at Satchmo's jazz room at Harrah's. The Ellis Marsalis trio performs this evening in a free concert at Lafayette Square. Kermit Ruffins and the Barbecue Swingers are at Le Bon Temps Roule.

Darell Levigne and Jesse McBride are at Le Salon at Windsor Court. The Jerry Embree Swing Band is at Mid-City Lanes Rock'n'Bowl. Johnny Vidacovich, George Porter Jr. and Mark Mullins tetam up at the Old Point. John Brunious leads the band tonight at Preservation Hall.
