Jazz Notes: Goings on in the jazz world

Bass player and accomplished jazz photographer Milt Hinton was born this day in 1910 in Vicksburg, Miss. Hinton was one of the busiest touring and recording jazz musicians in jazz, performing on more than 1,500 jazz and non-jazz albums since the 1930s. He died in 2000 at age 90.

Singer-pianist Helen Humes was born this day in 1913 in Louisville, Ky. She started recording at age 14. In 1938, Count Basie hired her to replace Billie Holiday as featured vocalist with his orchestra.


Composer and pianist George Russell was born this day in 1923 in Cincinnati, Ohio. His Lydian Concept of Tonal Organization was a beacon that paved the way for the modal playing styles of Miles Davis and John Coltrane.


Saxophonist Sahib Shihab was born this day in 1925 in Savannah, Ga.

Saxophonist Laura Dreyer and her Brazilian-jazz group "Mysterious Encounter" perform at the Europa Club in Greenpoint section of Brooklyn tonight.


The Dave Holland Quintet, Branford Marsalis Quartet, Take 6 and Nnenna Freelon bring the Boston Globe Jazz and Blues Festival to a close today with a free performance at the Hatch Shell on the Charles River Esplanade.


The 14th annual Clifford Brown Jazz Festival concludes today at Rodney Square in Wilmington, Del., with the Bootsie Barnes Quintet, the Onaje Allan Gumbs Septet, Robert Jospé and John Scofield.

In New Orleans tonight... the Shannon Powell quartet is at Donna's tonight. The David Dunbar quartet is at El Matador. The JMO Jazz Band is at the Ritz Carlton's French Quarter Bar. James Westfall and Larry Sieberth are at Le Salon at Windsor Court. Troy 'Trombone Shorty' Andrews is at the Maple Leaf. Harold 'Duke' Dejean's Olympia Brass Band is at Pre3servation Hall. Today's Vancouver Jazz Festival lineup includes Ahmad Jamal, Marilyn Lerner, the Turner-de Joode-van der Schyff trio, Distant Wind with Frank Gratkowski, Kate Hammett-Vaughan, John Kosrud's Orquestra Goma, Dura, The Electricks and The Herbaliser plus Llorca.
