Jazz Notes: Goings on in the jazz world

Today is June 23rd.


Bass player and accomplished jazz photographer Milt Hinton was born this day in 1910 in Vicksburg, Miss. Hinton was one of the busiest touring and recording jazz musicians in jazz, performing on more than 1,500 jazz and non-jazz albums since the 1930s. He died in 2000 at age 90.


Singer-pianist Helen Humes was born this day in 1913 in Louisville, Ky. She started recording at age 14. In 1938, Count Basie hired her to replace Billie Holiday as featured vocalist with his orchestra.


Composer and pianist George Russell was born this day in 1923 in Cincinnati, Ohio. His Lydian Concept of Tonal Organization was a beacon that paved the way for the modal playing styles of Miles Davis and John Coltrane.


Saxophonist Sahib Shihab was born this day in 1925 in Savannah, Ga.

The JVC Jazz Festival in New York tonight presents Lauryn Hill at Carnegie Hall. Pianist Joanne Brackeen, the Jamie Baum septet, Ada Rovatti quartet and Deanna Witkowski quartet are at Saint Peter's Church tonight.

Elsewhere on the New York jazz scene... the Kurt Rosenwinkel quartet is at the Village Vanguard. The Jackie McLean quintet is at Iridium. Guitarists Pat Martino and Larry Coryell are at the Blue Note. The Chico O'Farrill Afro-Cuban Jazz Orchestra is at Birdland tonight. Peter Leitch and Dwayne Burno are at Walker's tonight. Chris Washburne's Latin jazz band SYOTOS is at Smoke tonight. The Omar Sosa Octet is at Heckscher Park as part of the Huntington Summer Arts Festival on Long Island. Saxophonist Laura Dreyer and her Brazilian-jazz group "Mysterious Encounter" perform at the Europa Club in Greenpoint section of Brooklyn tonight.


The Dave Holland Quintet, Branford Marsalis Quartet, Take 6 and Nnenna Freelon bring the Boston Globe Jazz and Blues Festival to a close today with a free performance at the Hatch Shell on the Charles River Esplanade.


The 14th annual Clifford Brown Jazz Festival concludes today at Rodney Square in Wilmington, Del., with the Bootsie Barnes Quintet, the Onaje Allan Gumbs Septet, Robert Jospé and John Scofield.

Wynton Marsalis and the Brad Mehldau trio are at Wolf Trap in Vienna, Va., today.


In and around Chicago... Mike Finnerty and the Jazz Hippies are at Cafe Ennui. Judy Roberts and Greg Fishman are at The Chambers in Niles. This is the final night to hear Benny Green and Russell Malone at the Jazz Showcase. The Sonny Turner Quintet is at Joe's BeBop Café and Jazz Emporium. The Russell Alan Rowe Trio is at Pops for Champagne.


In New Orleans tonight... the Shannon Powell quartet is at Donna's tonight. The David Dunbar quartet is at El Matador. The JMO Jazz Band is at the Ritz Carlton's French Quarter Bar. James Westfall and Larry Sieberth are at Le Salon at Windsor Court. Troy 'Trombone Shorty' Andrews is at the Maple Leaf. Harold 'Duke' Dejean's Olympia Brass Band is at Pre3servation Hall. Brasilliance is at Snug Harbor. The Dukes of Dixieland are aboard the Steamboat Natchez tonight. Humphrey Davis and Walter Payton and Snapbeans are at the Storyville District Jazz Parlor.


On the California jazz scene... Bobby Hutcherson and his band are at The Catalina Bar and Grill in North Hollywood tonight. The Tom Harrell quintet is at the Jazz Bakery in Los Angeles. The Golden Eagle Dixieland jazz band is at Steamer's Jazz Café in Fullerton today.

Elena Maya is at Main Street Station in Guerneville. Bill Frisell's Intercontinental Quartet is at Yoshi's in Oakland tonight through Sunday. The Con Alma Quintet is at the Hedley Club in the Hotel De Anza in San Jose tonight.

In San Francisco tonight, Larry Vuckovich is at Bistro 339, Mingus Amungus is at Bruno's, The Post Junk Trio is at Enrico's and Steve Ross is at the Plush Room this afternoon, while Bobbe Norris and Larry Dunlap are there tonight. Don Asher is at the Bix Restaurant and Supper Club. The CARMA Big Band holds an open rehearsal at The Jazzschool in Berkeley tonight.


Toronto Downtown Jazz continues tonight with trumpeter Maynard Ferguson and His Big Bop Nouveau Band.


The Sal Cracchiolo and Melanie Jackson Sextet is at Rossini's Gastown in Vancouver, British Columbia, tonight.


Today's Vancouver Jazz Festival lineup includes Ahmad Jamal, Marilyn Lerner, the Turner-de Joode-van der Schyff trio, Distant Wind with Frank Gratkowski, Kate Hammett-Vaughan, John Kosrud's Orquestra Goma, Dura, The Electricks and The Herbaliser plus Llorca.
