Jazz Notes: Goings on in the jazz world

Today is June 20th.


Eric Dolphy was born this day in 1928 in Los Angeles. He defined a role in modern jazz for previously peripheral instruments like the flute and bass clarinet as well as being a virtuoso player on alto saxophone. The free jazz player died in Berlin in 1964 a week after his 36th birthday.


Trumpeter Lammar Wright was born this day in 1912 in Texarcana, Texas. He spent 17 years with the big bands of Benny Moten and Cab Calloway.


Looking at today's hip happenings...


The JVC Jazz Festival in New York presents Michael Feinstein at Carnegie Hall. The Kurt Rosenwinkel quartet is at the Village Vanguard this week. The Jackie McLean quintet is at Iridium all week. Guitarists Pat Martino and Larry Coryell bring their trios into the Blue Note through Sunday. Singer Carol Sloane is at Birdland tonight. The Knitting Factory tonight presents the world premiere of a new concert-length work by pianist Cecil Taylor and the Sound Vision Orchestra. Dr. John performs tonight at the Prospect Park Bandshell as part of the Celebrate Brooklyn series.


Arturo Sandoval Scullers is at in Boston tonight. Darin Ames is at the Regattabar in Cambridge tonight. The Inner Orchestra is at Ryles in Cambridge tonight. Marcus Miller is at the Berklee Performance Center in Boston with his band. Pianist Brad Mehldau and Sweden's Esbjorn Svensson Trio, also known as E.S.T., appear tonight at Copley Plaza as part of the Boston Globe Jazz and Blues Festival.


The Patrick DeSantos group is at Blues Alley in Washington, D.C., tonight.


Roberto Ocasio's Latin jazz project performs a free concert tonight at Turning Point Park in Cleveland. Take 6 is at the Palace Theater in Cleveland tonight.


The Ray Brown trio is at the Bird of Paradise in Ann Arbor, Mich., tonight through Saturday.


In and around Chicago...there's a weekly jam session with John Bany, Don Stille and Charles Braugham tonight at the Chambers in Niles. Fred Longberg-Holm's Lightbox Orchestra is at the Empty Bottle. Alan Gresik's Swing Shift Orchestra is at the Green Mill. Benny Green and Russell Malone are at the Jazz Showcase. Erwin Helfer and the Chicago Boogie Ensemble are at Joe's BeBop Café and Jazz. Temple Schultz is at Philander's in Oak Park. The Tito Carrillo quartet is at Pops for Champagne tonight.


In New Orleans tonight... Dr. Bone and the Hepcats are at the Banks Street Bar and Grill. Radio Nation is at Checkpoint Charlie. Dave Dunbar and Company are at the Circle Bar.
