Jazz Notes: Goings on in the jazz world

Drummer-bandleader Ben Pollack was born this day in Chicago in 1903. He was considered the father of big band swing, but r enjoyed even a fraction of the success of proteges Benny Goodman, Glenn Miller, Bob Crosby and Harry James who each spent time in his band.

On this date in 1939, the Artie Shaw Orchestra first recorded "Serenade to a Savage" on the Bluebird label.


This was also the day, in 1956, when Stan Kenton recorded Johnny Richards' "Cuban Fire."


Looking at today's hip happenings...


The Jazz Journalists Association held the 2002 edition of its Jazz Awards in New York this week. Trumpeter won the Lifetime Achievement in Jazz award and Dave Holland was named Musician of the Year. Fellow bassist and composer Charlie Haden took Album of the Year honors for his "Nocturne" CD. Omar Sosa's "Otir" was named Afro-Caribbean Jazz Album of the Year while "Partido Out" by Trio Da Paz was Brazilian Jazz Album of the Year. Henry Threadgill was named. Kurt Elling was named Male Singer of the Year. Female Singer of the Year honors went to Cassandra Wilson.

Jazz Journalism awards at the event at The Jazz Standard included the Lifetime Achievement Award to writer Ira Gitler, the Excellence in Jazz Broadcasting/the Willis Conover-Marian McPartland Award to Kenny Washington and the Excellence in Photography/the Lona Foote-Bob Parent Award to Enid Farber, who also won Photograph of the Year honors. Excellence in Newspaper, Magazine or Online Feature or Review Writing/the Helen Dance-Robert Palmer Award was given to Gary Giddins. On the New York jazz scene... the Kurt Rosenwinkel quartet is at the Village Vanguard. The Jackie McLean quintet is at Iridium. Guitarists Pat Martino and Larry Coryell are at the Blue Note through Sunday. Will Lee's Birdhouse band is at Birdland tonight. Singer Michael Camacho is at Shelly's tonight. The JVC Jazz Festival in New York tonight presents Joao Gilberto at Carnegie Hall. Tony Bennett is at Planting Fields Arboretum in Oyster Bay, Long Island tonight.


Drummer Max Roach is at the Artists Collective in Hartford, Connecticut tonight.

Keyboardist Jetro DaSilva, the North Star Jazz Ensemble and jazz bands from East Greenwich, Bishop Hendricken and Scituate high schools perform this afternoon at the new Summer Start Jazz Festival in East Greenwich, Rhode Island.


Faculty concerts at the Berklee College of Music tonight in Boston as part of its annual Saxophone Weekend and Brass Weekend feature trombonist Phil Wilson, trumpeter Charles Lewis and saxophonist Jim Odgren with students.


The Teresa Ines group is at Ryles jazz club in Cambridge, Massachusetts tonight. The Michael Musillami string trio with Ted Rosenthal and Dave Shapiro is at the Egremont Inn in South Egremont, Massachusetts tonight.


The 14th annual Clifford Brown Jazz Festival is in its final two days and nights in Wilmington, Delaware's Rodney Square. Today's lineup includes the Wilmington All Star Jazz Band, Marcus Printup and the Paradigm Shift Trio, Michael Austin and True Spirit featuring Dick Griffin, the Omar Sosa Octet, the Lynne Arriale Trio and the Delaware Symphony Orchestra featuring Marcus Miller and Terence Blanchard. Sunday's finale concert features the Bootsie Barnes Quintet, the Onaje Allan Gumbs Septet, Robert Jospé and John Scofield.


The Jamie Baum-Kenny Wessel-Jerome Harris trio is at The Waterwheel in Milford, Pennsylvania tonight with special guest Jeff Hirshfield on drums.

The Vancouver Jazz Festival presents Charlie Haden and Nocturne, Los Hombres Calientes, Jane Bunnett, Ken Vandermark and the Meta 4 Collective tonight among its many acts.
