Singer Dave Lambert, the middle-third of the great jazz vocal trio Lambert, Hendricks and Ross, was born this day in Boston in 1917. He died in 1967 in Connecticut, when he stopped to help another motorist change a tire - and was struck and killed by a passing truck.
Trumpeter Darren Barrett was born this day in 1967 in Manchester, England. His parents returned to their native Jamaica when he was nine months old but moved to Toronto five years later. That's where he grew up, and his father, a part-time musician, encouraged all four sons to become musicians. Barrett won the 1997 Thelonious Monk International Trumpet Competition.

On this day in 2001, Verve released tenor saxophonist Michael Brecker's multi-Grammy Award-winning album "The Nearness of You: The Ballad Book." It was produced by Pat Metheny and teamed Brecker with Metheny, Herbie Hancock, Charlie Haden, Jack DeJohnette and singer James Taylor, who got a vocal pop Grammy out of the project.

Pianist and arranger Bob Baldwin has created a contemporary jazz tribute in the aftermath of the World Trade Center attacks last September 11. The new compilation album is called "The American Spirit: A Smooth Jazz Celebration." Featured artists include Chuck Loeb, Kim Waters, Phil Perry and Nestor Torres.
Epic/Legacy Jazz has released additional recordings in its reissue of classic material from the CTI label founded and produced by Creed Taylor.
