Jazz Notes: Goings on in the jazz world

Pianist Chick Corea was born this day in 1941 in Chelsea, Mass. A two-year stint with Miles Davis in the late 1960s brought Corea international stature in jazz and established him as a leading player on electric keyboards.

Today is June 12th.


Pianist Chick Corea was born this day in 1941 in Chelsea, Mass. A two-year stint with Miles Davis in the late 1960s brought Corea international stature in jazz and established him as a leading player on electric keyboards.


On this day in 1935, Ella Fitzgerald made her recording debut with the Chick Webb band on the Decca label. That first song was called "Love and Kisses."


This was also the day, in 1940, when pianist Nat "King" Cole made his first recording as a leader. The tune was "Sweet Lorraine." It was released on the Decca label.

Pianist Marcus Roberts' trio with bassist Roland Guerin and drummer Jason Marsalis is at Iridium this week. Bassist Essiet Essiet's I.B.O. band is at the Zinc Bar tonight.


Cuban singer Albita is at Scullers in Boston tonight.


Inner Urge with saxophonist Antonio Parker, trumpeter Thad Wilson, pianist Allyn Johnson, drummer Nasar Abadey and bassist James B. King is at Blues Alley in Washington, D.C., tonight.


The Mike Ruth band is at Cascade Plaza in Akron, Ohio today.


On the Chicago jazz scene... the Dave Holland sextet is at the Jazz Showcase tonight. Mike Finnerty and the Jazz Hippies are at Cafe Ennui. The Bill Porter Orchestra with Rich Fudoli is at Green Dolphin Street. Ken Saydak is at Joe's BeBop Café and Jazz Emporium. Andrew Blenderman is at Philander's in Oak Park. The Ryan Cohan trio is at Pops for Champagne tonight.


In New Orleans... Matt Lemmler is at Cobalt. Leigh 'Little Queenie' Harris is at Dos Jefes. The Soul Rebels Brass Band is at El Matador. Ingrid Lucia is at the Ritz Carlton's French Quarter Bar. 3 Now 4 is at the Funky Butt. Louis Ford is at Satchmo's jazz room in Harrah's casino. Kermit Ruffins and the Barbecue Swingers are at Le Bon Temps Roule.

Paul Longstreth and Victor Atkins are at Le Salon at Windsor Court. The Jerry Embree Swing Band is at Mid-City Lanes Rock 'n' Bowl. Johnny Vidacovich and George Porter Jr. are at the Old Point. John Brunious leads the band tonight at Preservation Hall. Antoine Drye is at Snug Harbor. Carl LeBlanc and Chucky C are at the Storyville District Jazz Parlor. Matt Hampsey and Bruce 'Sunpie' Barnes give an 'African-American Religious Music & Jazz' workshop this afternoon at the New Orleans Jazz National Historical Park.


In California... George Bugatti is at The Catalina Bar and Grill in North Hollywood tonight with The Steve Rawlings Trio featuring Frank Capp and Chuck Berghoffer. The Shelly Berg trio Steamer's Jazz Café in Fullerton tonight. Singer Mary Stallings is at the Jazz Bakery in Los Angeles tonight through Sunday.

The Pharoah Sanders quartet is at Yoshi's in Oakland tonight through Sunday. Rick Vandivier is at the Hedley Club at the Hotel De Anza in San Jose tonight. In San Francisco, Fred Ross is at Butterfly tonight. the Michael Bluestein trio is at Enrico's, Tim Hockenberry is at The Plush Room, Bryce Rohde is at the Bix Restaurant and Supper Club, and the Vince Lateano Trio featuring Rick Whittington is at Jazz at Pearl's.


The Pat Metheny Group is in Milan, Italy, tonight.
