Jazz Notes: Goings on in the jazz world

Clarinetist Rod Cless was born this day in Lennox, Iowa in 1907. He recorded with Muggsy Spanier, Frank Teschemacher, Gene Krupa and Mezz Mezzrow. He died in 1944 at age 37 after a drunken fall.

On this day in 1941, Harry James recorded the song "You Made Me Love You," which quickly soared to the top of the pop charts.


This was also the day, in 1942, when Glenn Miller recorded his hit "Kalamazoo" for the Victor label.


On this day in 2001, pianist Chick Corea had a street named in his honor in his hometown of Chelsea, Mass.


Looking at today's hip happenings...


On the New York jazz scene... trumpeter Wynton Marsalis goes uptown tonight to the historic Apollo Theatre in Harlem to host an all-star fundraising event for Jazz at Lincoln Center. It features Whoopie Goldberg, Stevie Wonder, Vanessa Williams, Savion Glover and Roland Hanna. There's no word whether Marsalis will travel by "A" Train, cab or limousine.

Elsewhere in the Big Apple... saxophonist T.K. Blue's group is at the Arkadia Music Center tonight. Rick Germanson's trio is featured tonight in The Sidemen Steppin' Out series at the Screening Room. The Vanguard Jazz Orchestra is at the Village Vanguard. Les Paul is at Iridium. The Toshiko Akiyoshi Jazz Orchestra is at Birdland.

The Knitting Factory lineup includes a WTC Ground Zero Relief Memorial Fundraiser with various artists. Also on the bill are Blue Seven, Ohad Talmor, Russ Johnson, Matt Wilson, Dennis Lee, Bob Bowen, Oscar Noriega, Brompton's Cocktail, Space Robot Scientists and usaisamonster. Guitarist Ron Affif is at the Zinc Bar tonight.


The classic jazz films "Straight, No Chaser" and "Jammin' the Blues" will be shown tonight at Cuyahoga Community College's Madstone Centrum in Cleveland.


On the Chicago area jazz scene... Yoko Noge's Jazz Me Blues is at HotHouse. Kelly Brand is at Joe's BeBop Café and Jazz Emporium. The Typhanie Monique duo is at Pete Miller's Steakhouse in Evanston. Nadine Baxter is at Philander's in Oak Park.


In New Orleans... Bob French and Friends are at Donna's tonight. Riccardo Crespo is at Le Meridien. Brianna Guerin and Paul Longstreth are at Le Salon at Windsor Court. Reginald Koeller leads the band at Preservation Hall. The Mahogany Brass Band, Magnolia and Brian 'Breeze' Cayolle are at the Storyville District Jazz Parlor.

In California... Tony Lujan, Benn Clatworthy, Miles Davis alum Kei Akagi, Darek Oles and Jim Paxon are at the Jazz Bakery in Los Angeles. The Arlene and The Guys big band is at Steamer's Jazz Café in Fullerton tonight. The Catalina Bar and Grill in North Hollywood celebrates the six-year anniversary of its Young Jazz Artist Series tonight with a performance by The Terrace Martin Group.

Will Bernard and Motherbug are at Yoshi's in Oakland. Trumpeter Roy Hargrove's quintet is at the Kuumbwa Jazz Center in Santa Cruz. Frank Jackson is at The Plush Room in San Francisco. The Contemporary Jazz Orchestra is at Jazz at Pearl's in San Francisco.


The Pat Metheny Group is in Dresden, Germany tonight.
