Jazz Notes: Goings on in the jazz world

Saxophonist Georgie Auld was born this day in 1919 in Toronto, Canada. He came to prominence in 1937 in the Bunny Berigan orchestra. Other key steps in his musical development included stints in the Artie Shaw and Benny Goodman bands.

Tenor saxophonist Sonny Fortune was born this day in Philadelphia in 1939. The former Miles Davis, Elvin Jones and McCoy Tyner sideman leads his own small groups.


On this day in 1969, the jazz world lost its first great tenor saxophone soloist. Coleman Hawkins died in New York at age 64.


On this day in 1950... Sarah Vaughan recorded her hit song "Mean To Me" for Columbia.

On the New York jazz scene... the Von Freeman-Chico Freeman quintet is at Iridium tonight. Kenny Barron and Regina Carter are at the Blue Note through Sunday. The Fred Hersch trio is at the Village Vanguard. The Knitting Factory schedule tonight includes Sugarcult, River City High, Lefty, Student Rick and pianist Angelica Sanchez's quartet.

The Chico O'Farrill Afro-Cuban Jazz Orchestra is at Birdland tonight. Andy Statman and David Krakauer headline a Center for Traditional Music and Dance concert tonight at the Kaye Playhouse at Hunter College featuring Jewish musical worlds of the former Soviet Union.


Ken Peplowski, Howard Alden and Dick Johnson headline tonight's 4th annual Newport Friends of Jazz "Bill Angel tribute" at the Hyatt Regency on Goat Island in Newport, Rhode Island.


The New England Conservatory holds commencement in Boston this afternoon where honorary doctorate recipients include jazz great Sonny Rollins.


The Noel Freidline Quintet performs this afternoon at Sun City in Hilton Head, S.C.


The 25th Atlanta Jazz Festival opens its weeklong run of events today. While the rime concerts don't start until Saturday, there's a festival history retrospective today and Woody Williams Rhythmodics perform at the City Gallery at Chastain.

In Chicago today and tonight... the Chicago Jazz Ensemble featuring Kevin Mahogany in a challenge grant benefit concert and champagne brunch at Green Dolphin Street to support the Ensemble's research and scholarship in residence at Columbia College. "The Cabaret Series" featuring 10-year-old vocalist Susan May and Joanie Pallatto with Bobby Schiff and Sparrow takes place this evening at the Repertory Theatre.

Mike Finnerty and the Jazz Hippies are at Cafe Ennui tonight. Lenny King's Metropolitan Jazz Orchestra is at Fitzgerald's in Berwyn. Trumpeter Nicholas Payton winds up a weeklong run at the Jazz Showcase with his quintet. The Sonny Turner quintet is at Joe's BeBop Café and Jazz Emporium.


In New Orleans... Makari brings Greek and Turkish jazz to the Blue Nile tonight. Bob Sunda and Larry Sieberth are at Charley G's. The David Dunbar quartet is at El Matador. Jason Marsalis and Mboya Nicholson are at Le Salon at Windsor Court. Troy 'Trombone Shorty' Andrews is at the Maple Leaf with his brass band. Lucien Barbarin and the Sunday Night Swingsters are at the Palm Court. Harold 'Duke' Dejean's Olympia Brass Band is at Preservation Hall. Wayne Maureau is at Snug Harbor. Kiki Bonilla, Mark Braud and Eddie Bo headline the Storyville District Jazz Parlor.

In California... pianist Michel Camilo's trio is at the Catalina in North Hollywood. The Claudia Acuna band is at the Jazz Bakery in Los Angeles. The Golden Eagle Dixieland jazz band is at Steamer's Jazz Café in Fullerton this afternoon. The Roy Hargrove Quintet is at Yoshi's in Oakland.

Bill Henderson, Eric Comstock and Dena deRose present their Hollywood Songbook show at The Plush Room in San Francisco this afternoon. The Pacifica Jazz Festival continues tonight at the Sanchez Art Center in Pacifica with The Mid-Coast All-Stars, and The Wayne Wallace Latin Jazz Septet. Jazz on Fourth Street takes place this afternoon at various locations in Berkeley.Steve Erquiaga and Trio Paradiso are at The Jazzschool in Berkeley this afternoon. The CARMA Big Band holds an open rehearsal tonight at The Jazzschool in Berkeley.


The Ray Vega quintet is at Hellin (Albecete) in Spain tonight.
