Looking at today's hip happenings...

Tenor saxophonist David Klein said he was inspired to record his latest album, "My Marilyn," a jazz tribute to Marilyn Monroe, after watching the late movie star's publicist cry on camera while talking about her.

"I knew then that she had to be an amazing person underneath her star quality persona to evoke such feelings, which is what we were trying to capture when making this recording in honor of what would have been her 75th birthday," he told JazzReview.com.

The recording combines the talents of Klein, Mulgrew Miller on piano, Ira Coleman on bass, Marcello Pellitteri on drums and Miriam Klein on vocals performing a selection of the best songs from Monroe's movie career (a feat never before accomplished in jazz circles). The album includes rare photos and a 20-some page booklet enclosed in a deluxe CD box with cover photography by Bert Stern.

On the recording front...

Tom Schuman says his long awaited follow-up to "Extremities" represents "a large piece of my soul."

"Into Your Heart" (on JazzBridge Music) was released on Valentine's Day. ""This new release is a reflection of my life for the past decade. I put 100-percent of my mind, body, heart and spirit into this project. From the writing, to the performances, to the production, to the mixes, to the packaging..." Schuman told AllAboutJazz.com.

Tracks on the album include "Portrait of My Father," Schuman's tribute to his father, notable jazz bassist Wally Schuman.
