Jazz Notes: Goings on in the jazz world

Today is March 15.


Cornetist Jimmy McPartland was born in Chicago this day in 1907. He died in 1991.


Trumpeter and bandleader Harry James was born this day in 1916 in Albany, Ga.


The clarinetist and saxophonist Bob Wilber was born this day in 1928 in New York. As a teenager he studied with Sidney Bechet. As a veteran player he has immersed himself in diverse jazz situations.


Pianist Cecil Taylor was born this day in 1933 in New York. He initially was influenced by the style of Dave Brubeck, but by the late 1950s became a jazz abstractionist. Taylor abandoned chord changes and rhythms to play free jazz that is non-tonal and sidesteps conventional jazz rhythms.


Bassist Ugonna Okegwo was born this day in 1962 in London. He has been a frequent collaborator with pianist Jacky Terrasson and trumpeter Tom Harrell.


On this day in 1946,Nat King Cole recorded the Bobby Troupe tune "Route 66" for Capitol Records. From Chicago to L.A., and all over the country for that matter, it soon became a classic that remains a favorite of jazz and popular singers.

On the New York jazz scene, One For All, featuring pianist David Hazeltine, tenor saxophonist Eric Alexander, trumpeter Jim Rotondi, trombonist Steve Davis, bassist Peter Washington and drummer Joe Farnsworth, is at Smoke tonight.

The Roy Hargrove quintet is at the Village Vanguard. Andy Bey's trio is at Iridium. Arturo Sandoval is at the Blue Note as part of its Latin Jazz festival. Pianist Eric Reed's trio is at the Up Over Jazz Café in Brooklyn tonight and Saturday. Myrna Lake and her trio are at the Lenox Lounge in Harlem tonight and Saturday.

Arturo O'Farrill's Latin jazz quintet visits the Grace Church School in Manhattan tonight as part of Jazz at Lincoln Center's 7th annual Jazz in the Schools series.

Tudo de Bom performs the music of Brazilian composer Hermeto Pascoal tonight at the Drummer Collective. The quartet includes flute player Mark Weinstein, guitarist Richard Boukas, bassist Nilson Matta and drummer Paulo Braga.


Drummer Winard Harper's band is at Shanghai Jazz in Madison, N.J., tonight and Saturday. Saxophonist Houston Person's quartet is at Trumpets in Montclair, N.J., tonight and Saturday.


Los Hombres Calientes are in the B.B. King Dance Club and Herbie Mann is in the B.B. King Night Club tonight and Saturday at Foxwoods in Ledyard, Conn.


Toots Thielemans and Kenny Werner are at Scullers jazz club in Boston tonight and Saturday. Cuban pianist Gonzalo Rubalcaba's trio is at the Regattabar in Cambridge, Mass.


Singer Claudia Acuna is at Zanzibar Blue in Philadelphia tonight and Saturday. The Elio Villafranca quintet featuring trumpeter Terrell Stafford is at Chris's Jazz Café in Philadelphia tonight.


The Mid-Atlantic's factory outlet capital, Reading and surrounding Berks County, Pa., opens its annual Berks Jazz Festival today. Its 0 days and nights of music featuring a smorgasbord of talent. Scheduled performers include David Sanborn, Joe Sample, Fourplay, Patti Austin, Jeffrey Osborne, Spyro Gyra, Rick braun, Brian Culbertson, the Preservation Hall Jazz Band, Janis Siegel, Kurt Elling, New York Voices with the Reading Pops Orchestra, Fattburger, Mark Antoine, Special EFX, Gerald Veasley with the University of the Arts Big Band, Greg Karukas, Shemekia Copeland, Ken Navarro, Marion Meadows, Maysia, Joe McBride, Jimmy Bruno and the Dave Stahl Sacred Orchestra.


Composer Maria Schneider leads the Cleveland Jazz Orchestra tonight at the Cuyahoga Community College West Campus auditorium in Cleveland tonight.


Canadian saxophonist Jane Bunnett brings her Spirits of Havana into the Bird of Paradise in Ann Arbor, Mich., tonight and Saturday. Their 90-minute documentary film, "Spirit of Havana" will be shown at the club on Sunday evening.


On the Chicago jazz scene, the Afro-Rican Ensemble is at HotHouse tonight. The University of Illinois at Chicago Big Band performs for listeners and dancers tonight at Austin Town Hall. The Chris Lega-Pat Mallinger Quintet is at Andy's.

Carlos Cannon is at the Backroom. The Jerry DeVivo quartet is at California Clipper. Buster Williams' quartet is at the Jazz Showcase. Skinny Williams is at Joe's BeBop Café and Jazz Emporium tonight. The King Fleming trio is at Philander's in Oak Park. Leslie Byars and the Jazz Cats are at Pops of Highwood.


Drummer Bobby Sanabria and Quarteto Ache are at the Ashland, Wis., High School Auditorium tonight as part of Northland College's 2001-2002 Arts and Letters Series.


In New Orleans, Samirah Evans and Willie Metcalf are at the Bombay Club tonight. Leigh Harris and Amasa Miller are at Cobalt. Guitarist Russell Malone is at the Contemporary Arts Center. The Treme Brass Band is at Donna's. Dr. Bone and the Hepcats are at Dos Jefes. The Soul Rebels Brass Band is at the Dragon's Den. Trumpeter Jeremy Davenport is at the Ritz-Carlton's French Quarter Bar.

Devin Phillips is at the Funky Butt. Louis Ford and Topsy Chapman headline Satchmo's jazz room at Harrah's. The Red Hot Mamas featuring the Irene Sage band are at the House of Blues. Thais Clark joins the Eernie Elly Slickshots at the Palm Court tonight. Trumpeter Leroy Jones leads the band at Preservation Hall. Ellis Marsalis is at Snug Harbor. Bonerama and 20 Guitarskis perform Aaron Copland's 'Fanfare for the Common Man' tonight at Tipitina's.

Ellis Marsalis, Snooks Eaglin and Kent Jordan are featured tonight in a New Orleans String Project benefit concert at the University of New Orleans Performing Arts Center.

Sista Teedy, Rebecca Barry and Casandra Ankrum are featured with the All Woman's Treaditional Jazz band this afternoon at the New Orleans Jazz National Historical Park.


On the California jazz scene, singer Janis Siegel and the Eric Reed trio are at the Jazz Bakery in Los Angeles. Guitarist Pat Martino's trio is at the Catalina Bar and Grill in North Hollywood. The Jennifer York quartet is at Steamer's Jazz Café in Fullerton tonight. The Ann Dyer trio is at the Kuumbwa Jazz Center in Santa Cruz.

Saxophonist Michael Brecker's quartet is at Yoshi's in Oakland. The Rolando Morales trio is at Jack's Bistro in Oakland. Moodswing is at Main Street Station in Guerneville. Hot Town Jubilee is at the Hedley Club in San Jose. Valerie Quevedo is at Spiedo Ristorante in San Jose. Mas Cabeza is at Jupiter in Berkeley tonight.

In San Francisco, the Brian Melvin trio is at Rubicon this afternoon. Paula West is at the Plush Room tonight. The Post Junk Trio is at the Cosmopolitan Café. The Noel Jewkes quartet is at Jazz at Pearl's. Cannonball is at Bruno's.
