Jazz Notes: Goings on in the jazz world

Israel Crosby, an early jazz virtuoso on the double bass, was born this day in Chicago in 1919. He worked in a series of jazz orchestra and studio settings, and spent eight years in pianist Ahmad Jamal's trio beginning in 1954.

Trumpeter Bubber Miley was born this day in Aiken, S.C., in 1903. With his growling horn style, Miley became a central figure in Duke Ellington's first band, helping shape the band's characteristic sound. He died in 1932 of tuberculosis.


Tenor saxophonist J.R. Monterose was born this day in 1927 in Detroit. The onetime collaborator with Charles Mingus and Kenny Dorham died in 1994 in upstate New York, where he lived for many years.


Rhythm-and-blues influenced pianist Horace Parlan was born this day in 1931 in Pittsburgh.


Pianist Hod O'Brien was born this day in 1936 in Chicago. He attended the Manhattan School of Music but developed his chops by hanging around with New York's jazz greats. Bud Powell heavily influenced this bop-oriented player, an under-rated master of complex melodic lines.

On the New York jazz scene, guitarist Larry Carlton's group is at the Blue Note again tonight. Drummer Jeff "Tain" Watts is at the Village Vanguard with his quartet. Singer-pianist Mose Allison's trio is at Iridium. The Sonny Fortune quartet is at Birdland. Pianist Vijay Iyer's "Fieldwork" band with saxophonist Aaron Stewart and drummer Elliot Humberto Kavee is at the Jazz Gallery tonight. Drummer Charli Persip's trio is at the Lenox Lounge in Harlem. Andrea Brachfeld and Phoenix Rising are at Tito Puente's Restaurant on City Island. The Brazilian Guitar Quartet and the Richard Boukas-Jovino Santos Neto duo performs this afternoon at a family concert for The Americas Society in Manhattan.


Pianist Cyrus Chestnut's trio is at Scullers jazz club in Boston tonight.


Guitarist Joe Morris's trio performs tonight at a Hartford Jazz Society concert at Asylum Hill Congregational Church in Hartford, Conn.


In and around Boston, pianist Cyrus Chestnut trio with special guest Gary Bartz is at Scullers jazz club tonight. Pianist Joe Mulholland is at The Center for the Arts in Natick. Pianist Eyran Katsenelenbogen performs at First Parish Church in Scituate.


The second Miami Jazz Festival opens its weekend run today at Bayfront Park. Today's lineup includes a "voices of hope" gospel afternoon plus evening performances by Oleta Adams and Earl Klugh. Sunday's finale features Reuben Hoch and the Chassidic Jazz Project featuring Bobby Thomas Jr., along with Michael Wolff and Impure Thoughts, Ray Barretto and New World Spirit, and the Neville Brothers. Several high school ensembles will also perform.

The Bruce Katz Band is at the Martin Luther King Star Spangled Blues Festival in Pittsburgh tonight.


On the Cleveland jazz scene, trombonist Harold Betters is at Swingos on the Lake in Lakewood. Liquid Soul, Silver Company and Geronimo's Cadillac are at Peabody's DownUnder.


In Chicago tonight, pianist Marshall Vente and Project 9, saxophonist Billy Harper and Redd/Holt Unlimited perform tonight at the Jazz Showcase as part of the Marshall Vente Jazz Festival. Franz Jackson and His Jazz Entertainers are at the Green Mill tonight. Bopology is at Joe's BeBop Café and Jazz Emporium. The Jeff Parker quartet is at Pete Miller's Steakhouse in Evanston. The Kelly Brand-Suzanne Palmer quartet is at Pops for Champagne.


On the New Orleans jazz scene, trumpeter Leroy Jones' quintet is at Donna's tonight. Trumpeter Jeremy Davenport is at the Ritz Carlton's French Quarter Bar. Blues Krewe is at the Krazy Korner. Joe Krown's Organ Combo is at Le Bon Temps Roule. Samirah Evans sings at Le Meridien Hotel. Lionel Ferbos leads the Palm Court Jazz Band tonight. Pete Fountain toots on his clarinet at his club in the New Orleans Hilton. Wendell Brunious leads the band at Preservation Hall tonight. Kermit Ruffins joins Henri Smith for a CD release party at the Red Room. Irvin Mayfield's quintet opens a two-night run at Snug Harbor tonight.

For those who prefer their New Orleans jazz early rather than late, the Algiers Brass band is at the French Market Complex this afternoon. Louis Romanus is featured at a New Orleans Drums kids' program this afternoon at the Jazz National Historical Park. It will be followed by the Swing Those Blues organ combo featuring Charlie Dennard and Mark DiFlorio.


In California tonight, Joey DeFrancesco's trio is at Steamers Jazz Café in Fullerton. Joanne Brackeen and Ravi Coltrane are at the Jazz Bakery in Los Angeles. Drummer John Patitucci's quartet featuring drummer Horacio "El Negro" Hernandez is at the Catalina Bar and Grill in North Hollywood. The Bob DeSena Latin jazz band is at Club Brasserie in the Wyndham Bel Age Hotel in West Hollywood. Singer Kendra Shank is at The Jazz and Blues Company in Carmel. Pianist Gonzalo Rubalcaba's trio is at Yoshi's in Oakland. Trumpeter Dave Scott and the Harvey Wainapel quintet are at Jazz at Pearl's in San Francisco's North Beach neighborhood.


Pianist McCoy Tyner's trio is at Dimitriou's Jazz Alley in Seattle through Sunday.
