Jazz Notes: Goings on in the jazz world

Trumpeter Henry "Red" Allen was born this day in 1908 in New Orleans. Music came naturally to him. Allen's father ran a famous brass band in the Crescent City.

Baritone saxophonist Haywood Henry, a member of the Erskine Hawkins band for nearly 20 years, was born this day in 1913 in Birmingham, Ala. He died in 1994.


Longtime Ellington drummer Sam Woodyard was born this day in 1925 in Elizabeth, N.J. He was with Duke's band for 13 years.


Bass player Don Payne was born this day in 1933 in Wellington, Texas. He worked with Maynard Ferguson and Ornette Coleman and toured Africa with Herbie Mann. He also recorded bossa nova albums with Stan Getz and Astrud Gilberto in the 1960s.


Clarinetist Kenny Davern was born this day in 1935 in Huntington, N.Y. A busy traditional and mainstream player, he remains one of the most skilled and soulful clarinetists in jazz.


Looking at today's hip happenings...


On the New York jazz scene, the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra is at the Village Vanguard tonight. There are two big bands at Birdland tonight... with the Scott Whitfield Jazz Orchestra providing an early evening warmup for the Toshiko Akiyoshi Jazz Orchestra featuring Lew Tabackin. Guitarist Ron Affif's trio is at the Zinc Bar tonight.

In New Orleans tonight, Bob French brings his band into Donna's, the Jason Marsalis quartet is at the Funky Butt and Joe Krown leads the Piano Night merriment at Le Bon Temps Roule. Papa Grows Funk Funk is at the Maple Leaf. Trumpeter Reginald Koeller leads the band at Preservation Hall. Singer Charmaine Neville is at Snug Harbor. The New Birth Brass Band is at the Storyville District Jazz Parlor.


On the California jazz scene, the Charles Lloyd Quartet featuring Geri Allen, Larry Grenadier and Billy Hart is at the Kuumbwa Jazz Center in Santa Cruz tonight. Alex Budman leads the Contemporary Jazz Orchestra tonight at Jazz at Pearl's in Jazz at Pearl's in San Francisco's North Beach neighborhood. The Big Belly Blues Band is at Yoshi's in Oakland. Saxophonist Gordon Goodwin's Big Phat Band is at The Jazz Bakery in Los Angeles. Trumpeter Bobby Shew is special guest tonight with the University of North Iowa Big Band at Steamers Jazz Café in Fullerton.


Singer, bassist and multi-instrumentalist Richard Bona opens a weeklong run tonight at the Blue Note jazz club in Tokyo with his band.
