Singer Nellie Lutcher was born this day in 1915 in Lake Charles, La.


Trumpeter Al Killian, a veteran of the Count Basie and Duke Ellington orchestras, was born this day in 1916 in Birmingham, Ala.


Singer and pianist Victoria Spivey was born this day in 1906 in Houston. She died in 1976.


Looking at today's hip happenings...


On the New York jazz scene, Carnegie Hall presents a celebration of 40 years of Bossa Nova tonight with Gal Costa, Dori Caymmi, Jane Monheit, Cesar Camargo Mariano, Romero Lubambo, Filo Machado, Richard Galliano and Paula Robinson. Saxophonist Dave Liebman's Group is in the Monday night spotlight at the Blue Note. The Toshiko Akiyoshi Jazz Orchestra featuring Lew Tabackin is at Birdland. Saxophonist Patience Higgins and the Sugar Hill Jazz Quartet perform tonight at St. Nick's Pub in Harlem. Tonight's Knitting Factory schedule includes the Freedom Art Quartet and a fifth anniversary celebration of German horn player Hans Tammen and guitarist Joachim Zoepf's brand of intense European improvisation.


Drummer Robert Jospe's group is at Blues Alley in Washington, D.C., tonight.


On the Chicago jazz scene, pianist Hod O'Brien is at Joe Segal's Jazz Showcase tonight. Singer-pianist Patricia Barber's trio is at the Green Mill tonight. Germany's Frank Gratkowski trio, featuring John Lindberg on bass and Gerry Hemingway on drums, is at the Gallery 37 Center for the Arts' Storefront Theater tonight.


In New Orleans, Bob French and Friends are at Donna's. Denmark's Bourbon Street Jazz Band is at Fritzel's European Jazz Pub. Jason Marsalis is at the Funky Butt tonight. The Joe Krown organ Combo is at Le Bon Temps Roule. Charmaine Neville blends R&B with jazz tonight at Snug Harbor. Brian Seeger's Jazz Hang with James Alsanders, Rich Vogel and Tommy Sciple is at the Stationhouse Grill. The Treme Brass Band is at the Storyville District Jazz Parlor.


On the California jazz scene, the Steve Huffsteter Big Band is at The Jazz Bakery tonight in Los Angeles. The Catalina Bar and Grill in North Hollywood presents the David Urquidi Latin Jazz Quintet tonight in its Young Artists Jazz Series. Arlene and the Guys Big Band are at Steamers Jazz Café in Fullerton. Pianist Monty Alexander's trio is at the Kuumbwa Jazz Center in Santa Cruz tonight. The Dave Creamer quartet is at Yoshi's in Oakland. The Renegade Sidemen are at Anna's Place in Berkeley. In San Francisco, the Frank Jackson duo is at the Cypress Club, Clairdee and Ken French are at Enrico's, Boca is at the Black Cat and Blue Bar, and the Contemporary Jazz Orchestra with Duane Lawrence is at Pearl's tonight.


Buddy Greco's trio is at Rossini's Gastown in Vancouver, B.C., Canada, tonight through Wednesday.
