Jazz Notes: Goings on in the jazz world

Cuban percussionist Chino Pozo was born this day in 1915 in Havana. He was a cousin of Chano Pozo, the Cuban drummer who worked with Dizzy Gillespie to fuse jazz and Latin elements together. Chino Pozo also recorded with Gillespie, Tadd Dameron, Fats Navarro and Charlie Parker, and toured with Peggy Lee and Paul Anka.

Pianist Walter Bishop Junior was born this day in 1927 in New York City. Early in his career he played with Art Blakey, Charlie Parker and Miles Davis.


Electric bass player Steve Swallow was born this day in 1940 in Fair Lawn, N.J. He took up the plug-in version of the bass in the late 1960s while working in the Gary Burton quartet. Swallow was a key figure in setting out the jazz vocabulary for electric bass. He tours regularly with Carla Bley.

Bass player Eddie Gomez, a fixture in the Bill Evans trio from 1966 to 1977, was born this day in 1944 in Santurce, Puerto Rico.


On this day in 1944, singer Billie Holiday first recorded "Lover Man." Along with "Fine and Mellow," this slow and melancholic song about unrequited love became a signature tune for Holiday, the most influential woman singer in the history of jazz.

Jack Kleinsinger's Highlights in Jazz concert series opens its fall run tonight with a "Jazz from Bunk to Monk" program at Pace University's Downtown Theater with Howard Alden, Byron Stripling, Derek Smith, Ken Peplowski, Eddie Locke, Art Baron and Dennis Irwin. Eddy Davis and his Jazz All-Stars open the evening.


In and around Boston, pianist Mulgrew Miller conducts a New England Conservatory student ensemble tonight at Jordan Hall. Singer-pianist Bobby Short is at Scullers tonight through Saturday. Trumpeter Jon Faddis is featured soloist with the Ryles Jazz Orchestra tonight at Ryles in Cambridge.

Hammond B-3 player Bruce Katz's band is at the Regattabar in Cambridge. Pianist Jacques Chanier's trio is at Limbo in Boston tonight. James Merenda's Masked Marvels play the music of Charles Mingus tonight at the Chopping Block.


Medeski Martin and Wood are at the Calvin Theatre in Northampton, Mass., tonight. Michael Brecker, Herbie Hancock and Roy Hargrove bring their Miles Davis-John Coltrane tribute tour to the University of Massachusetts in Amherst.

The Radiators, Cyrille Neville, Anders Osborne and Marva Wright team up tonight for a New York City relief benefit at Tipitina's Uptown. Kermit Ruffins is at Vaughan's with his Barbecue Swingers.
