DC: PRES BUSH AND JUDGE ROBERTS ATTEND RED MASS
President George W. Bush attends the 52nd Annual Red Mass at St. Matthews Cathedral in Washington on October 2, 2005. Red Mass is a tradition that is held the Sunday prior to the Supreme Court’s opening session. The service gives special prayers for the court and the judges as they start hearing this session’s cases. This mass is special in that the new Chief Justice John Roberts was in attendance. Cardinal Theodore McCarrick (L), Archbishop of Washington, presides over mass and then walked out of the church at the end of the ceremony and stood on the steps next to President Bush and Chief Justice John Roberts.
