A Syrian brown bear walks in The Jerusalem Biblical Zoo in Jerusalem, Israel, July 26, 2011. In the early part of the twentieth century, the Syrian brown bear (Ursus arctos Syriacus) disappeared from the land of Israel. Biblical literature suggests that human inhabitants of the region would frequently encounter the species. The bears in The Jerusalem Biblical Zoo are among the last survivors of this subspecies, which is now thought to be extinct in the wild. UPI/Debbie Hill
