WAX2003051201 - WASHINGTON, May 12 (UPI) -- Researchers Heidi Dewar (left) and Barbara Block (right) of the Tuna Research and Conservation Center (TRCC), place an archival data-tag in a giant bluefin tuna, Thunnus thynnus, off the coast of Cape Hatteras, N.C. The data tags are providing new information about the transoceanic migrations of giant Atlantic bluefins, whose numbers have declined dramatically since the 1960s. The TRCC, a collaboration between Stanford University and the Monterey Bay Aquarium, has begun similar tagging work in the Pacific. The two institutions are playing a lead role in the Tagging of Pacific Pelagics, which will use data tags to track a variety of Pacific pelagic species. rlw/Stanford University/Monterey Bay Aquarium UPI.
