LOS ANGELES, Aug. 30 (UPI) -- ABC's "Modern Family" won for best comedy and AMC's "Mad Men" took top drama honors Sunday night at the 62nd annual prime-time Emmy Awards in Los Angeles.

"Modern Family," a series about a dysfunctional family, also won awards for best writing and supporting actor (Eric Stonestreet), the Los Angeles Times said.

"Glee," the Fox network comedy about a high school show choir that was nominated for a whopping 19 Emmys, won for best supporting comedic actress (Jane Lynch) and direction (series creator Ryan Murphy).

Pushed out of the winners circle this year was NBC's "30 Rock."

"Mad Men," set in 1960s Madison Avenue, won for the third year in a row, as did Bryan Cranston, star of AMC's "Breaking Bad," in which he plays a science teacher-turned-crystal meth cook.

HBO reigned in the movies and mini-series category with "Temple Grandin," "You Don't Know Jack" and "The Pacific," the Times said

Kyra Sedgwick won a best-actress Emmy for her role in TNT's "The Closer."

Bravo's "Top Chef" upended CBS's "The Amazing Race" in the reality series category.

Cable network programs won 17 Emmys to nine for broadcast networks.

HOLLYWOOD, Aug. 15 (UPI) -- U.S. TV actor Neil Patrick Harris says he is on track to becoming a parent of twins in the fall.

The star of "How I Met Your Mother" announced on his Twitter feed this weekend that he and partner, David Burtka, were "expecting" and that they were both thrilled about it, People said Saturday.

E! Online confirmed the babies were being carried by a surrogate mother.
