Not known as being the most rough and tumble of sports, baseball nonetheless poses some risks for players, mostly in the form of a ball hurtling at 100 mph right at them. Whether they were actually taking one for the team, ensuring a man would be on base, or just couldn't get out of the way quickly enough, we salute those hit by a pitch.
Pittsburgh Pirates batter Nate McLouth is tured around after getting hit by a pitch with bases loaded by St. Louis Cardinals Ron Villone in the eighth inning at Busch Stadium in St. Louis on May 31, 2008. Cards catcher Jason La Rue and homeplate umpire Joe West watch the action. Pittsburgh won the game 14-4. (UPI Photo/Bill Greenblatt)
