"Day of Rage" in East Jerusalem (30 images)

Violence erupted in Jerusalem after Hamas called for a "Day of Rage" to protest the consecration yesterday of the restored Hurva Synagogue in the Old City of Jerusalem.

Hamas had earlier declared a "day of rage and alarm" over the inauguration of the rebuilt synagogue, which is near the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound, sacred to both Jews and Muslims, and which Palestinians fear is the first step in an Israeli plan to destroy the Old City compound and rebuild a Jewish temple on its ruins.
