Stevens, a U.S. senator for 40 years, and four others died Aug. 9 when the airplane they were in smashed into the side of a mountain in remote southern Alaska. Four others were injured. Stevens, who was 86, was the longest-serving Republican in Senate history. He helped direct billions of federal dollars to Alaska and earned the nickname "Uncle Ted."

Edith Shain died Sunday in Los Angeles at age 91, the American Association of Women reported. Shain was photographed by famed photographer Alfred Eisenstadt kissing a jubilant U.S. sailor in celebration of the end of World War II, a picture that became one of the most famous images of the time, a son says. Meinhardt Raabe (Pictured at far right) played one of the leading Munchkins in "The Wizard of Oz,". Raabe made his only big-screen appearance as the Munchkin coroner who pronounces the Wicked Witch of the West "not only merely dead, she's really most sincerely dead." But he also spent decades as Little Oscar, the mascot of the Oscar Mayer company. Raabe died at the age of 94. (UPI Photo/Jim Ruymen).
