Senate Majority Leader Robert C. Byrd presents the “1987 Sentinel of Democracy Award” to Violetta Chamorro, publisher of the La Prensa newspaper in Managua, during a ceremony on March 27, 1987 in Washington at the Capitol. La Prensa, the oldest newspaper in Nicaragua, was prohibited from operating by the Nicaraguan government in April of 1986.
