McCarty of Dallas, TX, received a top award in the 16th Annual News Pictures of the Year competition here in Columbia, MO, on May 2nd, 1959, for this photo of Negro student Johnny Gray punching a white student during a brief skirmish on a street in Little Rock, Arkansas. The photo was taken last September 16, 1958, when tension surrounding school integration in the city was at a high peak. McCarty, who is Southwestern Division Pictures Manager for UPI, won First Prize in the Spot News category for this photo.
