The pact "provides a comprehensive framework for peaceful nuclear cooperation" between the two nations, "under agreed non-proliferation conditions and controls," the State Department news release stated.

After the initial 15-year period, there will be automatic renewals in five-year increments unless either party terminates it. The agreement allows for the transfer of technology, material, reactors and components for nuclear research and nuclear power production, the department said.
