Clinton projected winner in Puerto Rico

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico, June 1 (UPI) -- Democratic presidential hopeful Hillary Clinton was projected to handily win the Puerto Rico primary over Barack Obama Sunday, multiple U.S. networks projected.

With 4 percent of precincts reporting, the New York senator led her colleague from Illinois 67 percent to 33 percent, CNN reported.

Clinton's win in the island territory will give Clinton the bigger share of the 55 delegates up for grabs in the island territory.

CNN reported exit polls indicated Clinton led Obama in every major demographic group, including groups that have been loyal Obama supporters, such as younger voters and higher income voters.

Although Puerto Ricans can vote in the primary, they are not allowed to vote in November's general election since in is not a state.

Clinton's win in Puerto Rico comes ahead of the last of the state-by-state primaries Tuesday in Montana and South Dakota.

Going into the Puerto Rico primary, Obama led in the overall delegate count, with 2,051 to Clinton's 1,877.

To clinch the nomination, a candidate needs 2,118 delegates.

Sri Lankan violence kills 17 people

COLOMBO, Sri Lanka, June 1 (UPI) -- At least 17 people have been killed in Sri Lanka in a fresh wave of clashes between militants and government troops, officials said Sunday.

Defense Ministry officials said at least 12 Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam militants were killed this weekend in the northern part of the country, where four Sri Lankan soldiers also lost their lives, the Press Trust of India reported.

In addition to the 16 deaths attributed to the newest military clashes, an unidentified gunman shot and killed a 31-year-old businessman identified as Selliah Selvaraj in Horana.

Meanwhile, police in Colombo have arrested 12 people suspected of being involved in Saturday's grenade attack that killed two civilians, Xinhua reported.

The state-run Chinese news agency said the suspects are all of Tamil descent and police were still searching for a motive for the deadly attack, which left 10 people injured.

Violence interrupts Macedonian election

SKOPJE, Macedonia, June 1 (UPI) -- General election voting was stopped in several regions of Macedonia Sunday because of violence that has left at least one person dead, officials said.

"I want to express my conviction that we will succeed in calming the atmosphere and that we will complete the day as a country with democratic potential," said Macedonian President Branko Crvenkovski, who denounced both the shootings that have been reported and alleged voting irregularities.

Denis MacShane, a British member of Parliament who was part of that nation's election monitoring delegation, called the unrest, "an assault on democracy unacceptable in today's Europe."

Macedonia was holding early elections in a nationalist move seen as securing the rule of outgoing Prime Minister Nikola Gruevki's center-right party, Internal Macedonian Revolutionary Organization – Democratic Party for Macedonian National Unity, the British network reported.

Rival Albanian minorities in the former Yugoslavian republic engaged in conflicts ahead of Sunday's election and officials closed 12 polling stations in Albanian areas for security reasons, Deutsche Welle reported.

The vote could decide whether Macedonia joins the European Union and NATO.

Woman suspected of triggering raid

SALT LAKE CITY, June 1 (UPI) -- The woman suspected of making the now-discredited calls that triggered the raid on a Texas polygamous sect's ranch lived a troubled life, officials say.

Authorities have linked the calls claiming abuse at the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints to Rozita Swinton, a 33-year-old Colorado Springs, Colo., woman they say has assumed at least nine personalities since 2005.

She has been diagnosed with dissociative identity disorder, and complained to officials she had been sexually abused by her father, the Salt Lake Tribune reported Sunday.

After receiving calls from a woman, who said she was a teen being abused sexually at the sect's Yearning for Zion Ranch, Texas authorities raided the sprawling compound and removed more than 460 children.

Now, nearly two months after the raid, Texas appellate courts have said authorities lacked evidence to remove the children, the newspaper reported.

Swinton remains a "person of interest" in connection with the YFZ Ranch calls as they await unspecified test results, a spokesman for the Texas Rangers said.
