Democrats eyeing major oil changes

WASHINGTON, May 10 (UPI) -- U.S. Sen. Debbie Stabenow, D-Mich., said Saturday the Democratic Party has proposed wholesale changes to current federal oil policies.

Stabenow said during the weekly Democratic Radio Address that congressional Democrats introduced a plan aimed at stopping the escalating cost of gasoline through major oil policy changes.

Among the changes proposed in the Democratic plan are ending all tax breaks for large oil companies and forced investments in alternative energy by those companies.

Stabenow said any market manipulation by oil traders would be stopped under the new plan, as would the ongoing effort to fill the national Strategic Petroleum Reserve. The senator said the reserve is currently 97 percent full and the government would be better served to help U.S. drivers with lower gas prices.

Finally, Stabenow said the U.S. government should stand up to international groups like the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries.

"That's the Democratic plan. That's the plan our country needs," she said. "And with your help, we can get real results for you and your family."
