Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah earlier said recent government actions were tantamount to "a declaration of open war," CNN reported.
Officials said six people were injured. Fighting was limited to primarily Shiite and Sunni neighborhoods. No violence was reported in Beirut's Christian neighborhoods, CNN said.
Anti-government protesters blocked roads leading to the Syrian border checkpoint and the airport, reported KUNA, the Kuwaiti news agency.
Opposition leaders said their followers would maintain the blockade to the airport unless the government rescinded recent decisions, including dismantling Hezbollah's communication network and the transfer of a military leader when a security camera was found at the airport, reportedly installed by the militant group.
Lebanese Minister of Telecommunications Marwan Hamadeh said the siege must end before consideration of any discussions with opposition leaders.
"There is no backpedaling on the government decision to regain the state sovereignty and rule of law," Hamadeh told reporters.
