Mom pleads not guilty in daughter's death

CHCAGO, Ill., May 8 (UPI) -- An Illinois woman cried Wednesday while pleading not guilty to murder in the stabbing death of her 6-year-old daughter, who she had claimed was possessed.

Nelly Vazquez-Salazar, 25, of Waukegan was remanded to the Lake County Jail on $5 million following her tearful plea hearing before Judge Victoria Rossetti, the Chicago Tribune reported.

Vazquez-Salazar allegedly has told police her daughter Evelyn was possessed by a demon. The child had been sleepwalking in weeks before her death in early April, police told the newspaper.

Police said Vazquez-Salazar initially told police her daughter had attacked her and she acted in self-defense, then changed her story to say she had awakened early April 7 to find the girl sitting on her bed with a large butcher knife.

If convicted, Vazquez-Salazar would face life in prison.
