Inmate leaps from 3rd story window

DENVER, May 8 (UPI) -- A prisoner facing jail time in Denver chose Wednesday to hurl himself through a third-floor window, seriously injuring himself, authorities said.

Josephus Haynes, 41, who was shackled at the ankles but not handcuffed, broke through a closed window of the Denver City and County building, landing on a metal air-conditioning vent below, Denver County Sheriff Capt. Frank Gale told KUSA-TV. Haynes was reported in serious condition at a Denver hospital Wednesday night, the TV station said.

Gale said the prisoner jumped after being told by County Court Judge Doris Burde the misdemeanor assault charge against him could be upgraded to a felony because of his criminal past.

"I can't remember one in my 19 years that's jumped out of the third floor," Gale said. "It's not the kind of thing that I think people would expect would happen."
