N.Y. police chief to stop crime in Britain

LONDON, May 7 (UPI) -- London's new mayor, Boris Johnson, says he appointed former New York Police Commissioner Bill Bratton to advise him on enforcing zero tolerance of minor crimes.

Bratton, current chief of the Los Angeles Police Department, is set to give Johnson advice on how enforcing zero tolerance for minor crimes can lead to the prevention of more severe crimes, the Daily Mail reported Wednesday.

"Each fatal stabbing or shooting is at the apex of a pyramid of violence, thuggery and bullying that is making life less pleasant for everyone in the city," Johnson said.

Johnson's war against minor crime backs his efforts to prevent anti-social and violent acts among youths, the report said.

"Bill Bratton can teach us a lot about reducing crime. Obviously, he's not going to be a day-today adviser but he will be on the end of a phone to offer help," a person familiar with the decision said.
