EDMONTON, Alberta, May 6 (UPI) -- A former Catholic high school teacher was given a 15-month conditional sentence in Edmonton, Canada, for sexually exploiting a 17-year-old female student.

A judge said Mark McNally, 36, will serve his sentence in the community, but will be under house arrest every weekend and must provide a DNA sample. He must live under a weekday curfew from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m., avoid the girl and the school, the Edmonton Journal reported Tuesday.

The court heard the affair began with a kiss between McNally and the girl who can't be identified. She was one of his Grade 12 theater students in the 2202-2003 school year.

The relationship advanced and became more physical until it ended in December 2003, the court heard. Three years later, the girl came forward with charges, the report said.

Initially McNally was suspended from his job, and later resigned. He still has to face disciplinary action from the Alberta Teachers' Association for professional misconduct, the Journal said.
