Al-Jazeera television network cameraman Sami al-Hajj, who spent more than six years at the Guantanamo Bay prison, was taken to a hospital upon his arrival to Sudan Friday, al-Jazeera reported.
"I'm very happy to be in Sudan but I'm very sad because of the situation of our brothers who remain in Guantanamo. Conditions in Guantanamo are very, very bad and they get worse by the day," he said. "In Guantanamo ... rats are treated with more humanity."
Hajj, who was never charged or tried, was detained as an enemy combatant. During a hearing in the 1990s, U.S. officials said Hajj worked at a Qatar drink company that backed Muslim fighters in Bosnia and Chechnya.
Hajj's lawyers denied the accusations along with the accusation that their client met with Osama bin Laden's alleged senior lieutenant Mamdouh Mahmud Salim.
It is reported there are about 275 prisoners being held at Guantanamo.
