SALMIYA , Kuwait, March 28 (UPI) --
Kuwait police used tear gas to disperse tribesmen rallying for the release of eight men held for allegedly planning unauthorized elections, witnesses said.
About 500 tribesmen rallied for five hours at the Criminal Investigation Department in Salmiya, where the suspects were being held, the Kuwait Times reported.
The Wednesday demonstration reportedly became uncontrollable when several former officers attempted to release the detainees.
The suspects were taken into custody this week after being accused of participating in meetings to organize tribal primary elections before the general election on May 17, the Times reported.
Kuwait law bars primary elections and states that convicted violators could receive a 3-year jail sentence.© 2008 United Press International. All Rights Reserved.
