NAIROBI, Kenya, March 28 (UPI) -- Thousands of Kenyans have been displaced and schools have been disrupted by severe flooding in the Taita Taveta region.

Affected people have called on Kenyan Special Programs Minister Naomi Shaban to give them food and prompt the government to increase the area's drainage system, the Nation (Nairobi) reported.

Extensive rains in Northern Tanzania's Mount Kilimanjaro area reportedly increased flooding as water flowed to Taveta. Residents in Voi, Tanzania and Bondeni were transported to higher land after the banks of River Voi overflowed, the article said.

More than 200 homes were flooded, with people losing all of their belongings, including their livestock, residents told the Nation.

"We have lost all our food and we now depend on our relatives to bring us food," Mariam Morris said.

Guided by District Commissioner Mohammed Barre, Taveta officials reportedly visited flooded areas Wednesday and made requests for relief support.
