DALLAS, March 27 (UPI) -- Safety concerns prompted the controversial former pastor at the Chicago church Sen. Barack Obama attends to cancel a Texas visit, church officials said.

The Rev. Jeremiah Wright Jr., whose sermons were viewed as inflamatory, backed out of plans to attend a summit of black churches in Dallas, as well as several other appearances in the Lone Star State, the Fort Worth Star Telegram reported Thursday.

"But we're not canceling anything," said Elizabeth Payne, of Friendship West Baptist Church in Dallas, where some of the events a the banquet honoring Wright are scheduled. "That's going on regardless. None of this is going to stop us honoring his legacy."

The Rev. Marcus Cosby, pastor at Wheeler Avenue Baptist Church, told KTRK-TV and the Houston Chronicle safety concerns prompted Wright's decision to cancel his trip.

Wright cited "the safety of the institution to which he has been invited, the safety of his family, which has been placed in harm's way, and for his own safety" for his change of heart, the newspaper said.
