Mugabe warned not to 'steal' election

HARARE, Zimbabwe, March 27 (UPI) -- The main leader of the opposition in Zimbabwe warned President Robert Mugabe not to "steal" Saturday's election.

Opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai said if Mugabe steals the election it would send the country into an even deeper crisis and generate uncontrollable popular anger, The Financial Times reported.

In an interview, Tsvangirai said: "It is the people who have to respond. (Mugabe) will not have stolen it from Morgan Tsvangirai -- an individual -- but from the people. Such will be the overwhelming groundswell of popular feeling, he will not be able to contain it."

Mugabe has been in power for 28 years but is presiding over an economic crisis, one for which he is blamed by many critics.
