McCain has hypothetical cross-party edge

Published: March 27, 2008 at 11:22 AM
WASHINGTON, March 27 (UPI) -- Republican Sen. John McCain has stronger cross-party presidential support than either Democrat senators Barack Obama or Hillary Clinton, a Gallup Poll said.

In a hypothetical "McCain Democrats" survey, a contest between the Arizona Republican and Obama, D-Ill., gives McCain 17 percent of probable Democratic voters while Obama would win 10 percent of Republicans.

Against Clinton, D-N.Y., the poll found, McCain would win 14 percent of probable Democratic voters while Clinton wins 8 percent of Republicans.

The analysis, conducted at the request of The Politico, was taken from Gallup's daily polls March 7-22.

In a second survey, more than a quarter of Clinton supporters said they would vote for McCain if Obama is the Democratic nominee. Fifty-nine percent said they would go with Obama.

Seventy-two percent of those who support Obama for the Democratic nomination would vote for Clinton against McCain, while 19 percent would desert the party and vote for the Republican.
