Five believed trapped by Norway landslide

ALESUND, Norway, March 27 (UPI) -- Firefighters in Alesund, Norway, worked to douse fires inside a residential building destroyed by a landslide, trapping people inside, officials said Thursday.

Fifteen of the building's 21 residents were rescued. One resident was reported to be away on a trip and five others are thought to have been caught inside, Aftenposten said.

The fires, sparked by leaks when gas lines ruptured, and the building's instability blocked rescuers' efforts to reach those trapped, Aftenposten reported.

Authorities said they believe the five residents living on the building's lower floors were caught under the rubble just after 4 a.m. Wednesday when a landslide moved the building off its foundation.

Police said emergency workers couldn't enter the building until the gas burned off or dissipated.
