Argentine president warns farm strikers

Published: March 27, 2008 at 11:42 PM
BUENOS AIRES, March 27 (UPI) -- Argentine President Cristina Fernandez Kirchner said she will not negotiate with farmers on strike until they call off their protests.

Kirchner said once the strike ends, she will sit down with leaders of the farmers who are protesting the increased tax on some export goods, La Nacion reported Thursday online.

The strike -- now in its third week -- has caused food shortages in some parts of the country and severely hampered some exports.

Protesters have taken to the streets of the capital, Buenos Aires, in recent days, leading to clashes with authorities.
