Kerosene heater causes deadly house fire

Published: March 26, 2008 at 10:15 PM
INDIANAPOLIS, March 26 (UPI) -- A kerosene heater explosion is the likely cause of an Indianapolis house fire that killed two people, a victim's family member told authorities.

James "Leg" Maye, 84, and Jacqueline K. Love, 44, died in the Wednesday fire, said Trasey Graham, the sister of Love and a firefighter for the Indianapolis Fire Department. Love is one of the firefighters who responded to a report of the fire at her sister's home, The Indianapolis Star reported.

Graham said her father, Jimmy Love Sr., was filling a heater with kerosene at about 2 a.m. when flames broke out and eventually destroyed the $125,000 home.

Two people living in the home reportedly were treated at Wishard Memorial Hospital for non-live threatening injuries and one person was in critical condition upon arrival at the same hospital. A girl thought to be 10 years old was taken to Riley Hospital for Children with minor wounds, the report said.
