NEW YORK, March 25 (UPI) --
Investigators say they believe the thieves who drilled into a New York bank vault stole a key from the adjoining social services agency several days before.
The robbery at the Sovereign Bank branch in the Howard Beach neighborhood in Queens occurred on Easter weekend, the New York Post reported. Working from Angels of the Bay, a child evaluation center, the thieves drilled through cinder block and then through a reinforced wall, Jack Zimmardo, the building manager, said.
Police are unsure of the size of the haul. Sources told the Post that almost $100,000 in cash is missing, as well as the contents of safe-deposit boxes in a neighborhood that is a stronghold of the Gambino crime family.
On the night of St. Patrick's Day, someone broke a window at Angels of the Bay. Investigators now believe that the agency's spare key was stolen then, although at the time police assumed they were dealing with vandalism, the report said.
After they were done, the thieves stopped up the drain of a sink and left the water running, hoping that the flood would erase any traces they left behind.© 2008 United Press International. All Rights Reserved.
