BLUE BELL, Pa., March 25 (UPI) --
Hillary Clinton found herself dodging criticism Monday over her story about dodging sniper bullets 12 years ago.
The Democratic senator from New York who wants to be president recently told a story about having to dash across a runway to avoid gunfire after landing in Bosnia in 1996 when she was first lady, The New York Times reported.
"I remember landing under sniper fire," Clinton reportedly said in retelling the Bosnia visit. "There was supposed to be some kind of a greeting ceremony at the airport, but instead we just ran with our heads down to get into the vehicles to get to our base."
But CBS News video showed her casually exiting the aircraft with her daughter Chelsea in tow and stopping to listen to a girl read a poem.
While in Pennsylvania, Clinton said she "misspoke" about the events that day 12 years ago. She admitted as much to the Philadelphia Daily News editorial board and provided a less dramatic version.
Clinton said she had been told "that we had to land a certain way and move quickly because of the threat of sniper fire," but no shots were fired.
"So I misspoke," she said.© 2008 United Press International. All Rights Reserved.
