GOP rival squealed on Spitzer?

ALBANY, N.Y., March 24 (UPI) -- A Republican consultant tipped the FBI off on former New York Democratic Gov. Eliot Spitzer's alleged use of a call girl service, New York Newsday said.

The Miami Herald on Saturday published a Nov. 19 letter to FBI agents in New York from Roger Stone, an adviser to New York Senate Majority Leader Joseph Bruno, R-Brunswick, claiming Spitzer spent "tens of thousands" on high-priced call girls.

A source familiar with the case said the Spitzer investigation started in October following unusual wire transfers from Spitzer to front companies used by the call girl service, Emperor's Club V.I.P., Newsday said.

Stone says he is unaware what effect his letter had on the investigation and his attorneys said he handed over the information following an examination into harassing messages Stone left for Spitzer's father.

Stone stepped down from his position with the presidential campaign of former U.S. Sen. Bob Dole, R-Kan., in 1996 following the discovery an advertisement seeking a sexual threesome with Stone and his wife.

Spitzer resigned from office March 13 over the allegations he used the call girl service.
