RAMALLAH, West Bank, March 23 (UPI) --
U.S. Vice President Dick Cheney and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas met Sunday in Ramallah to share their dreams of an independent Palestinian state.
After Abbas thanked Cheney and the U.S. government for its continued support of that goal, Cheney outlined what it will take for their dreams to become a reality.
"Achieving that vision will require tremendous effort at the negotiating table, and painful concessions on both sides," Cheney said. "It will also require a determination to defeat those who are committed to violence and who refuse to accept the basic right of the other side to exist."
For his part, Abbas said peace in the region would only be obtained if Palestinian and Israeli officials, along with the international community, continue to support one another in the future.
"The requirements of the peace between the two sides are very clear," Abbas said. "And what is required is good will and the courage, and strong support from the international community -- particularly the United States of America -- and effective contribution from the quartet." © 2008 United Press International.
