SEOUL, March 23 (UPI) --
The South Korean government says it will initiate its first-ever search for the remains of independence leader Ahn Jung-geun, who was killed in China in 1910.
Yonhap reported Sunday that site where Anh's body is believed to be buried is being developed for an apartment complex, officials at the Ministry of Patriots and Veterans Affairs said.
Ahn was executed at Luishun prison in the port of Dalian, China, on March 26, 1910, five months after he assassinated the then-resident general of Japan's colonial government in Korea, Ito Hirobumi.
Ahn's remains are said to have been buried in the backyard of the Japanese colonial prison in Dalian.
Yonhap reported that South Korean officials had not been granted access to the site until now.
"The Chinese government notified us on March 10 that it agrees to allow a joint excavation team of North and South Korea to search the area, but also said that it would not be a problem if we launch an independent mission should forming a joint team with North Korea prove to be difficult," a ministry official said.© 2008 United Press International.
