BAGHDAD, March 22 (UPI) -- U.S. and Iraqi forces killed one suspect and detained 21 others during operations targeting alleged al-Qaida operatives in northern and central Iraq.

Coalition troops near Karwi targeted an alleged explosives-building network and detained eight people, including a man who attempted to hide his weapon on a child, U.S. military officials said Saturday.

They also discovered about 600 pounds of explosives material for bomb-making in a building. The material was destroyed.

In an operation in Mosul Saturday, forces said they captured an alleged al-Qaida in Iraq leader believed to have been promoted in the organization after coalition operations arrested or killed several suspected terror leaders in the region.
