MOSCOW, March 22 (UPI) -- Russian journalist Ilyas Shurpayev, a correspondent for Channel One, has been found dead in his Moscow apartment, police said.

The unidentified police spokesman told ITAR-TASS Shurpayev's body was found by firefighters early Friday when they responded to a report of a fire in his home.

"A signal about a fire in his apartment came an hour after midnight. Firefighters arrived and, putting out the fire, found the body of Shurpayev on the bed. A belt was strapped up on his neck," the police official said.

Channel One officials said they would be watching the police investigation into Shurpayev's death closely.

An official criminal case has been opened and police investigators have begun interviewing potential witnesses to learn the circumstances of the incident, ITAR-TASS said.
