Mudslides shut down highway into Russia

VLADIKAVKAZ, Russia, March 22 (UPI) -- Russian emergency officials said Saturday the Transcaucasian highway leading into Russia has been closed due to major mudslides.

The Emergency Situations Ministry said the highway, which connects Russia to the mountainous area of Transcaucasia, was blocked by the mudslides and rock falls caused by recent rainfall in the area, ITAR-TASS reported.

Traffic on the highway was stopped until further notice and road service workers were attempting to clear all debris from the roadway, the ministry said.

The Russian news agency said due to concerns that rainfall may continue to erode nearby slopes, travel in the area should be considered dangerous.
