JERUSALEM, March 22 (UPI) --
Vice President Dick Cheney promised U.S. support for Israeli security as he arrived in Jerusalem late Saturday.
Cheney met immediately with Prime Minister Ehud Olmert, Voice of America reported.
"The United States will never pressure Israel to take steps that threaten its security," he said.
Cheney specifically mentioned the Israeli response to rocket fire from Gaza. But he also said one goal of his visit is to move the peace process with the Palestinians.
President George W. Bush has said he hopes to get an agreement by the end of the year.
"On this journey, I am reiterating the president's commitment to his vision of two democratic states, Israel and Palestine, living side-by-side in peace and security," Cheney said.
Olmert said Israel is also committed to negotiations. He warned that Israel is under threat from Hamas in Gaza and Hezbollah in Lebanon.© 2008 United Press International. All Rights Reserved.
