Top cop joins army boss in Zimbabwe threat

Published: March 14, 2008 at 6:27 PM
HARARE, Zimbabwe, March 14 (UPI) -- Zimbabwe's top police officer has joined the army commander in declaring he will not support a change of government in the March 29 general elections.

Police Commissioner Augustine Chihuri said he would not allow "puppets" to rule Zimbabwe, an obvious reference to opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai and independent candidate Simba Makoni, both so labeled by President Robert Mugabe, the New Zimbabwean said Friday.

The top cop, speaking out in Harare, criticized the United States and Britain for what he called regime change efforts. Britain, in particular, was blasted for its "illegal sanctions" on Zimbabwe.

The "illegal sanctions," Chihuri said, "are the major cause of the problems troubling the country."
